Opinion: Choices and consequences

I was very encouraged to read the Toronto Sun editorial last week which recognized the pressing need to find new funding solutions to our transportation crisis. No one in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region has to be convinced that gridlock and poor transit service are daily frustrations. We are now paying the price for more than 20 years of inaction. Clearly, more of the same is not an option.

How can we break the transportation logjam?

The current CivicAction campaign called, led by John Tory, Mitzie Hunter and a broad coalition of 45 Regional Transportation Champions, is one important step.

According to Metrolinx, to fix our transportation crisis and dramatically improve how we move people and goods on roads, transit, bike lanes, and sidewalks throughout our region will require a minimum of $50 billion of new capital investment in commuter rail, subways, streetcars and buses over the next 25 years.
