There are 32 reasons to invest in public transit, John Tory told York Region council.
The former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader and current Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance chairperson was raising awareness about CivicAction’s latest campaign and reiterating the importance of supporting new, dedicated funding for transit expansion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
The 32 Reasons to Invest initiative, which began Nov. 1 and runs to Dec. 2, comes at a critical point in the conversation about how we will pay for the infrastructure we need over the next quarter century, Mr. Tory said.
The upcoming submission of the transit investment strategy advisory panel report, due next month, and the provincial government’s move to establish the Trillium Trust, which has been touted as a means of funding public infrastructure, such as transit, ought to be seen as significant developments, he said.
The fact that 4,000 residents and 132 elected officials of all political stripes have now taken the organization’s Your32 pledge has no doubt shown the province there is support for investments in transit, he said, adding York Region has the highest rate of participation among elected officials in the GTHA.
