Premier Wynne announces transit funding task force

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has formed a task force to report on implementing transit funding to, among other things, help pay for the Scarborough subway.

The task force will report back in December on the revenue tool options put forward by the provincial transit infrastructure agency Metrolinx. It will be led by former Conference Board of Canada CEO Dr. Anne Golden, and include Dr. Gordon Chong, who penned a controversial report for Mayor Rob Ford on ways to fund the Sheppard subway in 2011.

John Tory, Chair of CivicAction, echoed that sentiment.

“What’s critical in our view is that this Panel meets a short-term reporting timetable, without deviation, so that its purpose is respected, and so the province can get on with deciding on new sources of funding for a better regional transportation network,” he said in a news release.

Tory went on to say the province must work with municipal politicians “to repair a transit decision-making process that is badly broken. Members of the public are frustrated and fatigued with posturing, politicking and polarization around the issue of regional transportation investment.”
