John Tory says transit taxes will only work if they’re dedicated

John Tory believes investing in the GTA’s transit is warranted but that new revenue to be pay for it will only find favour among taxpayers if there’s an ironclad guarantee that the money won’t disappear into the “black hole” of general government spending.

“A confidence from the public that this money won’t be piddled away – the way lots of other money at all levels of government has been – is the most crucial thing at the moment,” the former Conservative leader said Monday while on a visit at Queen’s Park. “Everyone thinks we need the transit, everybody knows it needs to be paid for, but they’re just terrified it will go down the black hole.”
