GTA needs to beef up marketing to lure investment, jobs, says John Tory

The GTA could lure more foreign investment — and jobs — if a regional agency promoting it had more staff to compete with rivals like London, says John Tory, co-chair of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance.

Tory and Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan made a pitch for $2.5 million each from the Ontario and federal governments to “beef up” the GTMA, which has five employees compared with 35 for London, 17 for Montreal, 20 for Miami and 21 for Charlotte, N.C.

“We are simply not in the game as we need to be,” Tory, who is mulling a run for mayor of Toronto, told a news conference at Queen’s Park on Monday.
