Phillips — the chairman of Postmedia Network, ex-president and CEO of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. and the one-time chief of staff to former mayor Mel Lastman — starts the job with the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance on Tuesday.
He replaces John Tory, who resigned his position with the non-partisan alliance of senior executives and leaders when he registered to run for mayor earlier this year.
“CivicAction has a great history of being a grassroots organization that brings to bear on significant problems in the region the best minds and focus. I think there is a great future for that,” Phillips told the Toronto Sun on Monday.
“We’re proud of the conversation we’ve helped to start and maintain on transit, so that’s going to continue to be part of what CivicAction is about. There’s a focus we’re going to be taking around youth unemployment … it is taking those big problems and then taking bright people from across government, from across business, from the not-for-profit sector, bringing them to a table and finding solutions.”
