CivicAction is thrilled to congratulate its Chair John Tory on receiving the Canadian Urban Institute’s City Champion national award. John Tory receives his award today at a ceremony in Ottawa, and he will be recognized among seven distinguished individuals and groups who are making Canada’s cities healthier, safer, and more dynamic places to live and work.
By naming John Tory a City Champion, the selection panel recognized the significance of civic leaders thinking and acting regionally and the value of CivicAction’s efforts to build a more prosperous, thriving city-region.
Through his role in founding CivicAction, his decade of involvement, and in his two years since becoming Chair, John Tory has spearheaded the tackling of issues that are key to our region’s prosperity and developed innovative partnerships, campaigns, and initiatives such as the Your32 regional transportation campaign and the Business Advisory Panel on Income Security Reform. He serves as Co-Chair of DiverseCity: The Greater Toronto Leadership Project and, as Co-Chair of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, is leading an effort to revitalize the way the Toronto region does business with the world.
In 2012, John Tory also chaired the Minister’s Advisory Panel on Ontario Place Revitalization. He devotes considerable time and energy to volunteering and community service with the Canadian Football League, St. Michael’s Hospital, United Way Toronto, and the Toronto International Film Festival.
